PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP 22

Rob Cross went into Players Championship 22 at the Barnsley Metrodome today as the number three seed, following his fourth Pro Tour win yesterday and got off to a decent start by defeating Brian Woods 6-1 in the opening round.

 

In the second round, Cross came up against former world youth finalist Nathan Aspinall; coming through 6-2, hitting two maximums and averaging 95.97. The win included finishes of 123 (T20, T13, D12) and 106 (T20, 14, D16). 'The Asp' got off to a great start by taking the opening leg with an 11 darter, scoring 100, 180, 140 and taking out 81 (T19, D12). Cross levelled by taking out 96 (T20, D18) in a 14 dart leg and then took out the next two legs in 15 and 18 darts. Aspinall won the fifth leg in 18 darts, Cross made it 4-2 in 12 darts then took the last two legs in 17 and 15 darts. Aspinall hit two maximums and averaged 96.93.

 

Jonny Clayton ended the run of 'Voltage' in the third round, taking it 6-5.

 

Clayton went on to claim his first PDC title, beating James Wilson 6-1 in the final.

 

Cross won £1,000 in prize money to finish top of the Players Championship Order of Merit. Cross will be seeded number one at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead from 24th-26th November. 

 

Next up for Cross is the Happybet European Darts Trophy in Gottingen, Germany this weekend (13th-15th October).
